Like adults drama, teenage television series is also full of twists, excitement, and of course FUN. For them, a bit of laugh-out-loud scene is not enough to entice them and get hooked to a show.
Entertainment must be something REALLY funny for these kiddos. Anyway, to cut the introduction short, “Wizards of Waverly Place” captures the taste of the youth, just like that.
The Russo family portrays to be sort of a typical family in Waverly Place, New York, but they are actually nothing closer to such. Alex (Selena Gomez) and her brothers Justin (David Henrie) and Max (Jake T. Austin) are descendants of a long line of wizards who are compelled to master their newly discovered powers or else lose them forever. The patriarch Jerry, also a former wizard, gave up his powers when he married the mortal Theresa. The family owns a sandwich shop “Waverly Sub Station” in a street down Manhattan. The series follows the lives of this magical family in a comical presentation.
The family has to keep their powers unknown to the public while living in the world of mortals. The fantasy world can sometimes be surreal. The three siblings have to complete wizardly training after which they will engage in a wizard competition to determine who will remain to be a wizard forever. Only one of them will retain the power past the age of 18. The losing siblings will have to go back to their ordinary lives as mortals. Jerry, protective as he is, keeps a constant reminder to his kids not to rely on their powers too much because they might not have it forever anyway. The show is not merely pure fun; it also presents morals in family and friends relationships.
Other characters include Harper Finkle, Alex’s best friend, who learned the magical world of the Russos’ in season 2; Justin’s best friend Zeke Rosenblatt Beakerman; Mr. Herschel Laritate, principal of Tribeca Prep Sr. High School; Mason Greyback, first fully introduced as a student in Alex’s art class; Juliet Van Heusen, a teenage vampire and Justin’s ex-girlfriend; Hugh Normous, Alex’s tech friend; Stevie Nichols, the main antagonist in season 3; and Rosie, Justin’s current Angel girlfriend.
Todd Greenwald, creator and executive producer, developed the series after he worked as a writer and consulting producer on Hannah Montana’s first season. The teen comedy series is produced by It’s a Laugh Productions in association with Disney Channel Original Productions. The series premiered on Disney Channel on October 12, 2007 and gathered 5.9 million viewers. Because of the show’s popularity, the show airs internationally to cater the youthful avid followers. Wizards of the Waverly Place used the same opening sequence in its first three seasons, the six main characters getting ready for school. However, the sequence has been changed in the fourth season, in a crystal ball that features clips of episodes from the third and fourth seasons. The theme song “Everything Is Not What It Seems” is performed by the lead star Selena Gomez.
