What do we really know about vampires’ existence? Do these nocturnal creatures only show up at hours of darkness because the daylight kills them? Drinking of blood and creating havoc are basically what comes to our mind when we hear of vampires spell.
Perhaps we build their image based on what we see on old movies and what we read on novels. To begin with, producer Kevin Williamson was hesitant to do Vampire Diaries because he felt that the story was too akin to other vampire sagas.
With Julie Plec’s wiles, he began reading the novels and eventually found it interesting. Hence the creation of this fictional horror television series has then began.
Based on a novel written by L. J. Smith, The Vampire Diaries television series depicts the story of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) who is the main protagonist of the chronicle. Siblings Elena and Jeremy (Steven McQueen) are both orphans following the death of their parents from a car accident. Both are now living with their Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning) who still remains unaware of the bizarre phenomena on town. Elena finds comfort in the company of her friends Bonnie (Katerina Graham), Caroline (Candice Accola) and former love interest Matt (Zach Roerig). While the emotionally damaged Jeremy resort to drugs. On her first day being a senior high student, Elena was fascinated with a 160-year old vampire Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley) who is a new boy in school. Their relationship becomes more complicated as the latter’s elder brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) returns to Mystic Falls, Virginia. As Stefan plans to live a normal life, Damon on the other hand prepares to wreak brutality on the town and fight against him. Both brothers fell in love with Elena because of her resemblance to their previous love interest Katherine Pierce (also played by Nina Dobrev). After awhile, the story revealed that Elena is a distant relative of Katherine. On its second season, Katherine turns out to be the main antagonist of the series. The lopsided love triangle of three main characters makes the story intriguing.
The first season was given a full 22-episode after topping the ratings for the first half of the premiere season. Currently, Vampire Diaries is airing its second season at The CW network. Besides the top-rating episodes, the fictional television series has now won several awards and is positively criticized by the acclaimed entertainment reviewers. The actors are definitely doing a good job portraying how vampires can be.
Prior to the release of the Vampire Diaries first season, critics have been comparing the then upcoming show to the renowned Twilight saga. Even today, followers of both books series are still avidly defending their respective favorites. I am likewise a sci-fi junky but I personally believe that both fictional stories have their own twists and possess different storylines. So before any blood shed, let us be reminded that these illusory books and TV series are created only to expand our imagination and not to create panic on us.
