Merging the best television elements of Judge Advocate General (JAG) and Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is a top-rater police procedural drama series that revolves around a fictional team of adept agents.
The crew conducts investigations in relations to the U.S Navy and Marine Corps. NCIS premiered on September 23, 2003 and is now currently airing its 8th season on CBS.
Leading the Major Case Response Team is a former Marine gunnery sergeant Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). This Special Agent is a smart, skilled investigator who is willing to bend the rules just to get the job done. Gibbs is typically a man of few words. Working under him is Special Agent Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), a Senior Field Agent of the Major Case Response Team. Gibbs considers DiNozzo to be his younger version, both uses their guts to solve cases. Like Gibbs, DiNozzo also has a constricted patience when it comes to scientific method and technical terms. Joining the tandem is Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), an exceptional forensic specialist; Dr. Donald Mallard (David McCallum), the Chief Medical Examiner at NCIS and a long time friend of Gibbs; and NCIS Special Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray), a Junior Field Agent of the Major Case Response Team. Combining their skills and forces, this unique group travels around the globe to investigate all criminal episodes involving Navy or Marine Corps ties. These special agents work to solve high-profile cases of murders, kidnappings, terrorist threats to stolen submarines.
Before launching its first season, CBS identified the show as “Naval CIS”. During the entire premiere season, NCIS was airing under the title “Navy NCIS”. However, as “N” stands for “Naval”, the title was carped due to the CBS’ objection of “Navy NCIS” being technically redundant. After some negotiations between the CBS and the creator Donald Bellisario, the name was then shortened to NCIS.
The main setting of this critically acclaimed police procedural television series is set in Washington, DC but the tapings are done in Santa Clarita, California.
NCIS strikes ratings as it averages 15.65 million viewers in its fifth season. In fact, the show is one of the few that increases viewership as it progresses. Usually, the longer the show airs the show is likely to drop ratings and decrease in popularity. Now on NCIS 8th season, the much loved series tapped another record breaking viewership reaching 22.85 million views on air. “It’s simply amazing that a show in its eighth season continues to perform at such an elite level,” said Nina Tassler, CBS Entertainment President. Aside from being a top rater, NCIS has already won several awards since its existence. Likewise this 42–44 minute running show is internationally distributed to a countless of territories.
It ain’t enough of the good news yet. CBS just has officially renewed NCIS for a ninth season. Mark Harmon (Special Agt. Gibbs) signed a new two-year deal to stay with the show. This is certainly a “smiler” for all NCIS-sters out there!
