How I Met Your Mother, premiered on CBS on September 19, 2005, is romantic comedy television series that was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays.
The two are former writers of “Late Show with David Letterman”. The plot was inspired by their experiences and drew Ted’s character based on Bays’s and Marshall and Lily are based on Thomas and his wife.
At first, Thomas’s wife Rebecca was hesitant to have Lily’s character based on her. But as Alyson Hannigan, who was looking to do more comedy shows at that time and agreed to portray her role, Rebecca gave it a go signal.
The story is about the affable and slightly anxious Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and how he fell in love. It started when Ted’s bumbling best friend Marshall “Marshmallow” Eriksen (Jason Segel) wanted to propose to her long-time sweet but wild girlfriend Lily “Lily Pad” Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan). At that moment, Ted was quite in a dilemma to likewise find his true love. He was feeling a bit of pressure to find his soul mate after the two got engaged. With the help of his friend-slash-ladies man Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), Ted was out to find the love of his life. He then met Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), a TV news reporter who used to be a Canadian pop star. Ted was sure that it was indeed love at first sight but perhaps destiny might have otherwise in store. The story is narrated by Bob Saget through flashbacks from the vantage point of 2030. Ted was regaling his kids with the story of how he wooed and won the heart of their mother, which explains the title’s narration in the past tense. Each episode plays an ostensibly important detail on how Ted met “The Mother”.
During its season four telecast, the show had an average of 9.42 million viewers. The season four episode 12 hit a show-record breaking of 11.85 million views, the show’s highest rating since its debut. How I Met Your Mother has also been nominated and won several awards. Recently won was “Favorite TV Comedy Actor” from People’s Choice Awards for Neil Patrick Harris. DVD copies of previous season have also been released for marketing.
The bar MacLarens, where some of the filming takes place, is taken from McGee bar in New York. The creators wanted to incorporate the mural from McGee into the show. In addition, the name of the bar was drawn from Bays’s assistant, Carl MacLarens. The creator also named the bartender in the show, Carl. Another “personal touch” that is incorporated to the show’s creation is depicted on the theme song “Hey Beautiful” by The Solids, of which the two creators are members. The mother of co-creator Bays is an ordained minister which Bays confessed that she would only call him if the show’s jokes were not funny. In addition, characters Lily, Ted, and Marshall on HIMYM were all graduates from Wesleyan University, an alma mater of the show creators.
