House is a medical television drama that airs since November 16, 2004.
The series follows Dr. Gregory House who is a snappish medical genius and heads the diagnostic department of the fictional Princeton- Plainsboro Teaching Hospital in New Jersey.
In its typical episode, House is presented with perplex medical condition by which he and his team will rule out the diagnosis. In the complicated process, his team clashes in a professional competition. Likewise, House often finds himself opposing with his boss Dr. Lisa Cuddy and with his only friend Dr. James Wilson. The brilliant diagnostic doctor has gained a great deal of respect despite his unconventional way of solving medical puzzles. All of the characters serve as thwarts to House’s medical practice but most of the times fall to his adverse ideas. Despite his antisocial behavior, his team members admire him, want to impress him and really hate him- all at the same time.
Most episodes start with scenes showing patients quick background either at home or at any ordinary setting. The patient then starts to show signs of medical abnormality such as throwing up, convulsing or bleeding. He/she is then brought to the Princeton-Plainsboro to be treated. Dr. House’s diagnostic team then kicks off to rule out the probable cause of ailment. At the end of the day and after the rest of the team has wasted their time ruling out no case, House always saves the day. The medical genius has been so controversial because of his obnoxious and narcissistic personality but he turns out to be always right. House uses a cane to aid his motility since he lost a substantial portion of the muscle in his upper leg. Consequently, he is constantly dealing with pain which is alleviated with Vicodin resulting to his drug dependency, a Sherlock Holmes’s resemblance.
Dr. House‘s character in this critically-acclaimed melodrama series is somewhat similar to the character of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. Creator David Shore confessed that he is always a Holmes’s fan hence resembling the show to the old publication. The similitude is evident on several aspects of House’s spirit either on his inductive reasoning or his psycho-logic way of thinking. Both usually turn down cases which he doesn’t find interesting at all. As Sherlock Holmes once said “When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” Apparently, their surnames also sound-alike and figuratively means the same. Both geniuses can also play instruments; House on piano, guitar and harmonica while Holmes plays violin. And if we look for more resembling personalities then there can be more similarities to be revealed.
Because of its sweet and sour blend, no doubt House has gained avid viewers throughout the United States and even across the world. In fact, the top rater show was distributed to 66 countries in 2008. It has likewise won several awards which includes 9 People’s Choice Awards, 2 Golden Awards, 4 Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award. House is currently running its seventh season on Fox channel.
