The title itself depicts the concept of Glee. This musical comedy-drama TV series first premiered on Fox channel last 2009.

The story focuses on the McKinley High singing club “New Directions” competing on show choir circuit. One of the series’ creators Ian Brennan initially conceptualized Glee as a film rather than being a TV series. The idea popped up based on his experience as a glee club member of the Prospect High School. Brennan completed the script in 2005 however failed to find producers to actualize the concept. Mike Novick, who is a friend of Brennan, referred the script to Ryan Murphy with the hope that the latter can relate to the story since Murphy was once a member of a choir in college. Fortunately, he felt the connection with the script and the project was then initiated together with Brad Falchuk. The four agreed to produce Glee as a TV show. After a series of script revisions and its submission to Fox, finally Glee kicked off on screen in 2009. The producers have intended to create a show that is unusual to the accustomed genre for television. True to their words, Glee is nothing like the usual shows. “There’s so much on the air right now about people with guns, or sci-fi, or lawyers running around. Everything’s so dark in the world right now, that’s why Idol worked. It’s pure escapism,” Murphy explained.
Unlike the traditional role casting, Glee stars were hand picked after Murphy invested his time at Broadway. There he found Michael Morrison (Will Shuester), Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) and Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina Cohen-Chang). Likewise, auditioning casts were required to lay bare their singing and dancing talents as Glee is a melodious show. Other casts include Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Jane Lynch (Susan “Sue” Sylvester), Jayma Mays (Emma Pillsbury-Howell), Jessalyn Gilsig (Terri Schuester), Cory Monteinth (Finn Hudson),Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones), Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel), Mark Salling (Noah “Puck” Puckerman) and Diana Argon (Quinn Fabray).
Glee’s musical performances have gained commercial success. In fact, Gleeks purchased 21 million digital copies of Glee singles while over 9 million albums were purchased worldwide. The premiere episode of Glee was watched by 9.62 million viewers and its succeeding episodes averages 6.10 to 7.65 million views. On 6 February 2011, Glee attained its highest ever TV rating with 39.5 million views. Aside from being a top rating TV show, Glee has likewise received several awards and nominations in its 2 years of existence. Apparently true to Murphy’s word, Glee has introduced a new genre on the entertainment television. The musical show is now airing on its sophomore season.
