Community is a smart comedy television series that airs on NBC, and premiered on September 17, 2009 in the 9:30 pm ET timeslot and then moved to 8:00 pm ET timeslot after three episodes. The show is currently airing its second season.
With the creation of Dan Harmon, an eccentric group starred by Joel McHale as Jeff Winger comes to existence.
Jeff is a fast-talking glib lawyer whose degree has been revoked after The Colorado Bar Association found out that he actually has a bogus license.
Jeff returns to college and attends Greendale Community as a deal with the association so as not to disbar him. During his stay at the Community, he forms a study group, hopeful to graduate as soon as possible. The plot focuses on his experiences with the group and his pursuit to win Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs), student who’s trying to clean up the mess of her past. She used to be a high school dropout after she junked school thinking that her decision will impress Radiohead. Ha! After which, she started vandalizing the walls of the town where she grew up. Anyhow, Britta is back to school and trying to get her life back as well. While Jeff and Britta slip into friendship, the story would show some of their romances on screen.
Other members circling the group include Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase), a moist-towellete tycoon. His father owns the giant and multi-awarded Hawthorne Wipes company. He enrolled at Greendale Community aiming for companionship and popularity, however he finds himself sometimes disoriented with the youth, as he is a bit older than the others; Annie Edison (Alison Brie), a 20-year old straight-laced Jewish second year student at Greendale. Despite her youthfulness, she is by far the most studious among other members of the group; Troy Barnes (Donald Glover), a former high school quarterback player. The injury he got in high school was revealed to be self-inflicted because he could not stand the pressure of a talent scout during a big game. Now, Troy would rather play football for fun at Greendale; Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown), a divorced mother of two who’s taking advantage of schooling to market her baked foods. She is a devoted Christian and sometimes gets annoyed with non-Christian members of the study group; Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi), a tri-lingual pop culture junkie who aspires to become a director, taking film classes at Greendale; and Ben Chang (Ken Jeong), a former Spanish maestro who now desperately tries to fit in the study group.
Creator Dan Harmon reiterates the importance of perfect casting to make the comedy show work. The assertion of Community was drawn from his real-life experiences. Harmon was actually enrolled at Glendale Community College located in northeast of Los Angeles in the attempt to save his relationship with his former girlfriend. He then got himself involved in a study group with whom he had very little in common. “…I was in this group with these knuckleheads and I started really liking them,” Harmon explains.
